Bheeshma Lake, a historic landmark and important water source in Gadag-Betageri, is facing severe pollution, raising concern among residents and environmentalists.
Sewage entering the lake has reportedly caused a foul smell and large numbers of fish to die. Residents fear continued contamination could affect the area’s groundwater.
The lake attracts visitors who come to see the 116-foot statue of Jagadguru Basaveshwara and enjoy boating. It is also used by residents for morning and evening walks. However, the worsening stench has made the area unpleasant, while people are worried that polluted air and water could create health problems.
The recent death of thousands of fish has increased public concern. Residents suspect that sewage and other pollutants have reduced oxygen levels in the water. They have demanded that the pollution control authorities and municipal officials collect water samples and conduct scientific tests to identify the exact cause of the fish deaths.
The issue has also raised questions about official action. Deputy Lokayukta Justice K.N. Phanindra reportedly inspected the lake following a public complaint and directed officials to stop sewage from entering it. Residents allege that while the flow was temporarily stopped, no permanent alternative arrangement was made, allowing sewage to accumulate near the lake and eventually enter the water.
The pollution has created another serious concern because wells and borewells around the lake depend on groundwater recharge. Several private tankers reportedly draw water from nearby sources for supply across the twin cities. Residents fear contamination could eventually affect drinking water and public health. They have urged authorities to act immediately, test the water, stop sewage inflow permanently and protect the lake before the damage becomes irreversible.
“The historic Bheeshma Lake should be made pollution-free immediately. A scientific purification unit or an alternative canal should be arranged so that sewage water does not permanently enter the lake. Strict action should be taken against the officials who have violated the Lokayukta’s order.
