South Africa’s SA20 has transformed the matchday experience and successfully brought large crowds back to cricket stadiums, according to former South Africa fast bowler Chris Morris.
While the Indian Premier League remains the biggest T20 franchise competition financially and commercially, Morris believes SA20 has established a strong identity by consistently attracting spectators across South Africa. The tournament, played during the country’s summer months, has benefited from the presence of leading players such as Heinrich Klaasen, Kagiso Rabada, David Miller, Lungi Ngidi, Dewald Brevis and Tristan Stubbs.
Speaking ahead of the SA20 Season 5 Auction, Morris said the league had created strong local connections by giving supporters clear teams to follow. He explained that unlike earlier domestic competitions, where provincial loyalties could overlap, SA20’s franchise structure has made supporters identify closely with their local teams.
“The most important thing that stands out for me is now people actually have teams to support,” Morris told IANS during an online interaction facilitated by SA20.
Morris said packed stadiums and the atmosphere around matches have helped SA20 attract people who may not traditionally follow cricket. While international cricket involving the Proteas remains the country’s biggest attraction, SA20 has encouraged new audiences to experience live cricket.
He said the league’s combination of quality players, competitive matches, entertainment and energetic crowds has made it a major annual sporting attraction. Morris believes SA20 can continue growing because some of the world’s best players are keen to participate.
The upcoming fifth season will feature several international stars, including England’s Joe Root, Phil Salt, Sam Curran and Will Jacks, along with Australia T20I captain Mitchell Marsh.
Morris identified Marsh’s arrival at three-time champions Sunrisers Eastern Cape as a major talking point. He praised the Australian’s explosive batting, bowling ability and leadership qualities, saying his involvement could have a significant impact on an already strong team.
