India continued its impressive performance at the Commonwealth Fencing Championship in Lagos, Nigeria, securing seven medals on the second day of competition.
The Indian team won one gold, two silver and four bronze medals across the Senior Individual Women’s Sabre, Women’s Epee and Men’s Foil events. The strong medal haul underlined India’s growing depth and competitiveness in international fencing.
In the Senior Women’s Epee event, Tanishka Khatri produced an outstanding performance to claim the gold medal, while compatriot Khushi Dabhade finished second to take silver. Prachi Lohan added another bronze medal, giving India three podium finishes in the discipline.
India also enjoyed a strong outing in the Senior Women’s Sabre individual competition. Aakhari secured the silver medal after finishing behind England’s Brierley, who won gold. Indian fencers Jefarlin and Shruti Joshi shared bronze medals, further strengthening India’s medal tally on the second day.
In the Senior Men’s Foil event, Tejas Patil battled through a competitive international field to win bronze. Cyprus’ Alex Tophalidas secured the gold medal, while England’s Oliver Starange took silver. Patil’s performance added another medal to India’s successful campaign.
The Indian squad’s progress has been supported by coaches Bharatji Thakor, Shrihari Pise and Shankar Narayanan, along with physiotherapist Amruta Balkawade and team manager Manu Tyagi. Their preparation and support have played an important role in maintaining the team’s strong performances.
Fencing Association of India Secretary General Rajeev Mehta congratulated the medal winners, coaches, support staff and officials for their efforts. The championship will continue in Lagos until August 14, with India aiming to maintain its medal-winning momentum in the remaining events.
