The Supreme Court will hear Tamil Nadu’s plea seeking Karnataka’s compliance with CWMA water-release directions.
The Supreme Court on Monday agreed to hear on August 13 Tamil Nadu’s plea seeking enforcement of the Cauvery Water Management Authority’s (CWMA) direction to Karnataka to release 3,500 cusecs of Cauvery water daily for 15 days.
Tamil Nadu approached the apex court on August 3, challenging Karnataka’s alleged non-compliance with the CWMA’s July 30 direction concerning releases from the Kabini and Krishna Raja Sagara reservoirs. The state has sought a total release of 4.536 TMC, corresponding to 3,500 cusecs daily for 15 days.
The matter was mentioned before a bench headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, along with Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana. Senior advocate C.S. Vaidyanathan represented the Tamil Nadu government.
Tamil Nadu has urged the court to ensure the stipulated quantity reaches the state within the prescribed period. It has also sought directions to resolve the dispute and secure its share of Cauvery water.
The DMK has separately approached the Supreme Court, seeking immediate implementation of the CWRC’s July 28 direction, subsequently upheld by the CWMA. The party has sought daily monitoring of reservoir releases and flows at Biligundlu.

The dispute centres on directions issued by the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee and subsequently upheld by the CWMA. The authorities directed Karnataka to ensure a flow of 3,500 cusecs daily at Biligundlu for 15 days from July 29. Tamil Nadu has sought enforcement of the order, while the DMK has also urged monitoring of reservoir releases and compliance reports to the Supreme Court.
