Union Cooperation Minister Amit Shah stressed the need for stronger cybersecurity and modern technology in urban cooperative banks (UCBs), announcing the launch of a 24/7 Security Operations Centre (SOC) to help the sector respond to growing cyber threats.
Shah made the announcement while inaugurating the new office of the National Urban Co-operative Finance and Development Corporation (NUCFDC) in Mumbai. The initiative is aimed at making urban cooperative banks more secure, technologically advanced and competitive. The government has also planned a nationwide core banking service to support modernization across the sector.
The 24/7 Security Operations Centre will provide shared cybersecurity capabilities to participating cooperative banks, helping them monitor threats, identify suspicious activities and respond more quickly to cyberattacks. The move comes as smaller banks increasingly adopt digital banking services and face the need for stronger protection of customer and financial data.
Shah has also encouraged urban cooperative banks to make greater use of the support and technology being developed through NUCFDC. The corporation is expected to play a wider role in providing technical expertise, compliance assistance and common digital infrastructure to banks.
The government has highlighted the need for greater participation of UCBs in shared platforms. Reports indicate that only around half of the nearly 1,400 urban cooperative banks have joined NUCFDC so far, with an objective of bringing the entire sector onto the common platform within the next year.
The minister’s focus on cybersecurity comes alongside efforts to strengthen governance, technology adoption and operational risk management in cooperative banking. The government also released a practical guide on operational risk management for UCBs at the event.
The measures are expected to help smaller cooperative banks improve their digital capabilities while strengthening protection against cyber fraud and other emerging risks. The broader objective is to build a more secure, resilient and modern urban cooperative banking sector.
