Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday congratulated Indian weightlifter Lovepreet Singh and discus thrower Seema Kaliramna for securing silver and bronze medals respectively at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, applauding their determination and commitment to excellence.
Lovepreet delivered an outstanding performance in the men’s +110kg weightlifting event, finishing with a combined lift of 388kg. The Indian lifter narrowly missed the gold medal by just one kilogram, with New Zealand’s David Liti claiming the title after lifting 389kg. Despite the close finish, Lovepreet etched his name in the record books by setting a new Commonwealth Games record in the snatch event.
Taking to X, Prime Minister Modi praised Lovepreet’s remarkable achievement, highlighting his dedication and wishing him greater success in future competitions.
In athletics, Seema Kaliramna earned a bronze medal in the women’s discus throw with a best effort of 58.65m. Battling challenging conditions, she managed only two valid throws out of six attempts. After opening with a foul, Seema recorded throws of 57.32m and 58.65m before ending the competition with three consecutive fouls. Her second-round effort proved enough to secure a place on the podium.
The Prime Minister also lauded Seema’s performance, stating that her achievement had made the nation proud and inspired young athletes across the country.
The two podium finishes further strengthened India’s campaign at the Commonwealth Games. With Lovepreet’s record-breaking display and Seema’s resilient performance under difficult conditions, India’s medal tally rose to 17, comprising three gold, 10 silver and four bronze medals.
