Coinbase shares fall after quarterly loss

New York

Shares of cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase fell 5.6 per cent in premarket trading on Friday after the company reported its third consecutive quarterly loss, although analysts said its expanding business mix could provide long-term support.

The decline came amid renewed weakness in cryptocurrency markets. Bitcoin has lost more than 27 per cent of its value so far in 2026, while Coinbase shares have fallen nearly 28 per cent during the same period.

Higher-than-expected US inflation data has reduced expectations of an early interest-rate cut by the Federal Reserve. The prospect of higher borrowing costs for a longer period has weighed on risk-sensitive assets, including cryptocurrencies. Investors have also withdrawn funds from spot cryptocurrency exchange-traded funds, adding pressure to the market.

Analysts said difficult trading conditions and limited visibility on the recovery of cryptocurrency volumes contributed to the company’s quarterly performance. However, they noted that Coinbase continues to strengthen its position despite the broader market downturn.

The company recorded its third consecutive quarter of record cryptocurrency trading market share, reaching 10.3 per cent, according to analyst David Bartosiak of Zacks Investment Research. He said Coinbase was continuing to gain market share even in a weaker trading environment and that its business mix was improving.

Coinbase has been diversifying beyond its traditional dependence on spot Bitcoin trading. The company is expanding into stablecoins, derivatives and other financial products to reduce its exposure to sharp swings in cryptocurrency trading activity.

In May, Coinbase and prediction-markets platform Kalshi announced plans to introduce perpetual cryptocurrency futures to US investors through regulated domestic exchanges.

Analysts at William Blair said they were encouraged by Coinbase’s diversification strategy and expected investors to support derivatives-led market-share gains. The firm maintained a positive view on the company, arguing that its stronger fundamentals and broader revenue base could help it benefit from a future recovery in cryptocurrency markets.
