Farmers in Chamarajanagar protested against the release of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu on Friday, demanding action to protect Karnataka’s water needs.
The protest also led to the cancellation of screenings of actor Vijay’s film Jana Nayagan at a local cinema hall.
Led by farmer leader Hallikerehundi Bhagyaraj, protesters gathered near Basaveshwara Cinema Hall holding empty plates and pots. They raised slogans opposing the water release and said Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay should understand Karnataka’s struggles through an aerial survey. They questioned how dams could provide water to others when people faced drinking water shortages.
Farmers said they would continue their fight until their concerns were heard by authorities. Bhagyaraj stated that the government should consider the difficulties of farmers and take immediate steps during the crisis. Protesters also blocked the Bengaluru-Dindigul highway near Chamarajanagar and demanded that the central government intervene in the Cauvery issue.
The farmers requested drought status for the district and sought support through cattle shelters and fodder supply. They submitted a petition to officials asking authorities to stop releasing water until local needs were addressed. Cinema workers removed Vijay’s posters after protests grew stronger and cancelled the day’s shows. The farmers said their movement would continue peacefully to highlight the problems caused by water scarcity.
They urged leaders to find a fair solution that protects both states and ensures farmers receive enough water for their livelihoods. The protest ended with a call for dialogue and immediate attention to the region’s water concerns while maintaining peace among communities and supporting the farmers’ future with care.
