Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that while Ukraine, European partners, and the United States all want to end the ongoing war, Russian leader Vladimir Putin refuses to cooperate.
Speaking during an interview in Washington, Zelenskyy emphasized that Moscow has rejected every push for a temporary ceasefire to allow diplomats space for peace talks.
Because of this resistance, the Ukrainian leader stressed that stronger international pressure and economic sanctions remain vital. His remarks followed a major procedural vote in the US Senate, where lawmakers overwhelmingly advanced a tough new sanctions package targeting Russia. Zelenskyy called the legislative step a meaningful move toward peace and paid tribute to the late Senator Lindsey Graham, who had championed the sanctions bill before his passing.
During his visit to the United States, Zelenskyy met with President Donald Trump and congressional leaders from both political parties to discuss ongoing defense cooperation. Talks with US defense executives also focused on boosting joint military technology production and strengthening anti-ballistic air defense systems to protect civilian lives on the ground.
Zelenskyy pointed out that despite suffering massive monthly troop losses, Moscow continues its military campaign. However, he noted that the overall battlefield momentum has finally shifted in Ukraine’s favor, bolstered by a rapidly growing domestic defense technology sector that now features hundreds of companies supporting frontline soldiers.
