Roads in the popular hill station of Madikeri, often referred to as the “Tourist Paradise” of Karnataka, have deteriorated into a network of potholes, drawing sharp criticism from residents, motorists and tourists. Citizens have accused the Madikeri City Municipal Council of neglecting road maintenance, resulting in hazardous driving conditions across the town.
Several key roads, including the stretch from General Thimayya Circle to Raja Seat, the New Private Bus Stand Road, Abbey Falls Road and Sampigekatte Road, have developed hundreds of potholes. Continuous rainfall has further worsened the situation, with waterlogging making it difficult for motorists to identify the depth and location of the potholes.
Vehicle riders say navigating these roads has become a daily challenge, forcing them to manoeuvre carefully to avoid accidents. During heavy rain, potholes remain submerged under water, increasing the risk of vehicles losing balance and causing mishaps. Residents allege that minor accidents have become a common occurrence as motorists attempt to avoid damaged sections of the roads.
Locals have questioned why the civic authorities failed to carry out even basic patchwork before the onset of the monsoon. They pointed out that dry weather prevailed until the end of June, providing sufficient time for repair work. However, they alleged that municipal officials and elected representatives did not utilise the opportunity, allowing the roads to deteriorate further once the rains intensified.
The poor condition of the roads has also affected tourism, a major source of livelihood in Kodagu district. Tourists visiting Madikeri to experience its scenic beauty have reportedly expressed disappointment after encountering damaged roads and difficult driving conditions throughout the town.
Residents said water accumulates on the roads during heavy rainfall, making commuting unsafe for motorists, pedestrians and two-wheeler riders alike. They have urged the authorities to take up comprehensive road reconstruction instead of temporary repairs.
The public has appealed to the local MLA to press the state government for additional funds to upgrade Madikeri’s road infrastructure to a higher standard. They believe durable road development is essential not only for public safety but also to protect Madikeri’s reputation as one of Karnataka’s premier tourist destinations.
