Following strict new safety regulations, over 500 homestays across Karnataka have submitted applications for official registration with the Tourism Department. The state government made this process mandatory to guarantee tourist safety, proper cleanliness, and legal operational standards. This major regulatory push comes after a tragic crime in Kodagu district raised serious security concerns regarding thousands of unauthorized accommodation facilities operating across the region.
Tourism Department Commissioner V. Ram Prasat Manohar urged all unregistered owners to submit their formal applications under the new rules. A joint team of police officers, district collectors, zilla panchayat members, and urban development officials is currently reviewing paperwork and conducting mandatory physical inspections. Out of the total submissions received, officials have already processed over 400 applications for detailed site evaluation.
During these visits, inspectors carefully evaluate each property’s safety measures, basic infrastructure, and hygiene levels. Establishments that fail to meet required state criteria will be denied registration until they fix every highlighted deficiency. Once a homestay passes inspection and receives final approval, authorities will issue an official registration certificate within 45 days. This document remains valid for five years, after which operators must apply for mandatory renewal.
Through this massive drive, the government aims to create an authentic database of verified homestays and ensure safe, high-quality stays for all visiting tourists. Unregistered hosts are encouraged to comply quickly to prevent legal action or immediate closure. This vital initiative promises to rebuild visitor confidence while dramatically raising overall hospitality standards throughout Karnataka.
