Intro
Trump renewed unsubstantiated claims of Chinese interference in the 2020 election, prompting a strong denial from Beijing while reviving calls for stricter U.S. election security laws.
Washington
U.S. President Donald Trump has intensified his focus on election security ahead of the November midterm elections, once again alleging that China interfered in the 2020 presidential campaign despite previous U.S. intelligence findings that found no evidence supporting such claims.
In a nearly 30-minute prime-time address from the White House, Trump repeated his long-standing assertions that American elections remain vulnerable to foreign influence. He cited newly declassified documents, claiming they exposed shocking vulnerabilities in the U.S. electoral system.
However, the documents released did not provide evidence that votes cast during the 2020 election were altered, manipulated or affected by foreign interference. Intelligence agencies had earlier concluded there was no proof that China attempted to change the outcome of the presidential race.
China swiftly rejected Trump’s allegations. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian described the accusations as totally fabricated and a malicious smear, insisting that Beijing has consistently followed a policy of non-interference in the domestic affairs of other nations.
Lin also urged Washington to stop using China as an election issue and instead work towards improving bilateral relations. He suggested that the United States should reflect on its own actions rather than level unfounded accusations.
Trump also renewed his appeal for Congress to pass the SAVE America Act, legislation that would introduce stricter voter identification and citizenship verification requirements. Democrats continue to oppose the bill, arguing that voter fraud in the United States remains extremely rare.
The speech comes as Republicans prepare for crucial midterm elections while facing political challenges, including public dissatisfaction over the Iran conflict, rising energy prices and concerns about the cost of living.
