Meta expands Louisiana data center to boost AI computing capacity

Washington

Meta Platforms has announced plans to expand its data center in Richland Parish, Louisiana, to achieve 5 gigawatts of computing capacity as the company accelerates investments in artificial intelligence infrastructure.

The expansion is part of Meta’s broader strategy to strengthen its computing capabilities and support the growing demands of AI development, including advanced AI models and agent-based technologies. The company said the project represents an investment of more than $50 billion in the Louisiana region.

Since construction began in December 2024, local Louisiana businesses have received more than $1.6 billion in contracts linked to the data center project, according to Meta. The company also plans to invest over $1 billion in local infrastructure improvements, including upgrades to roads, water systems and wastewater facilities.

The move highlights the rapid expansion of AI-focused data centres by major technology companies as demand for computing power continues to exceed available capacity. Meta, along with other global technology firms, has been committing billions of dollars toward building large-scale infrastructure to support artificial intelligence workloads.

The company has announced plans to invest $600 billion in US infrastructure and jobs over the next three years, with a significant portion directed toward expanding data centre networks and AI capabilities.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has placed artificial intelligence at the centre of the company’s future growth strategy, with investments aimed at developing advanced AI systems and applications. The Louisiana facility is expected to become a major component of Meta’s global computing infrastructure.

The expansion is also expected to provide economic benefits to the region through construction activity, local business opportunities and infrastructure development.

As competition intensifies among technology companies to secure AI computing resources, large-scale data centre investments have become a key priority. Meta’s Louisiana expansion reflects the broader industry shift toward building powerful infrastructure needed to support the next generation of artificial intelligence technologies.
