New Delhi
New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon said India has achieved major economic progress, with 250 million people moving out of poverty under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership. He said the country’s middle class has expanded to 440 million people and could reach 750 million by 2030, describing the change as an impressive transformation during a business and sports event in Auckland.
Luxon said he has admired India’s progress for many years and remembered his first visit to the country during the 1990s while working with Unilever. He explained that India has changed greatly from those early days, moving from a low-income economy toward becoming a stronger global economic force. He also praised improvements in infrastructure, education, tourism, and business opportunities.
The New Zealand leader highlighted discussions with Prime Minister Modi about India’s rapid development, including the expansion of airports and the growing need for more aircraft to support domestic travel. His comments came during Modi’s visit to New Zealand, which marked the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the country in four decades.
The visit also strengthened relations between India and New Zealand as both nations upgraded their ties to a Strategic Partnership. They introduced a roadmap for cooperation until 2030 and aimed to increase bilateral trade to NZD 7 billion. The two countries also agreed to support cooperation in areas including agriculture, skills, innovation, tourism, and the early implementation of their trade agreement.
Luxon’s remarks highlighted India’s changing economic position and growing international importance. He said the country’s development journey has created new opportunities for millions of people and inspired observers around the world. As India continues expanding its economy and global partnerships, leaders from other nations are watching its progress closely. The focus now remains on maintaining growth, creating opportunities, and ensuring that development benefits people across all sections of society. Experts believe continued reforms and cooperation will help India strengthen its position further while supporting inclusive growth for future generations. The nation is expected to remain a key contributor to global economic progress through innovation and sustainable development in future.
