Chikkamagaluru retaining wall develops cracks within months, raising safety concerns for taluk office, houses and nearby structures during monsoon rains

A retaining wall constructed at a cost of ₹1.84 crore in Shringeri town of Chikkamagaluru district has developed major cracks within a few months of completion, raising concerns over the safety of nearby houses, shops and government buildings.
The retaining wall, located near Gorigudda below the taluk office area, was built using funds from the Disaster Management Fund and the MLA’s special grant. The structure was constructed to protect the mosque and surrounding upper areas, but its early deterioration has triggered questions over the quality of the construction work.
Several houses and small commercial establishments are located below the damaged wall, leaving residents worried about a possible collapse, especially during the ongoing monsoon season. Locals fear that heavy rainfall could worsen the cracks and lead to a major accident if immediate action is not taken.
Former minister D.N. Jeevaraj visited the spot and inspected the condition of the retaining wall. He directed officials to take urgent precautionary measures before the structure collapses and creates a threat to public safety.
Jeevaraj criticised the alleged poor quality of work and demanded strict action against contractors and officials responsible for the construction. He said the safety of residents, public offices and nearby buildings should be the government’s top priority.
“If such poor-quality works are carried out by compromising standards, the consequences will affect the public. Those responsible for wasting taxpayers’ money must be held accountable,” he said.
Residents expressed concern that a collapse could damage the nearby dargah, Vidyaranya Gram Panchayat building, taluk office and other surrounding structures. They urged the concerned departments to conduct an immediate technical inspection and begin repair works before rainfall intensifies further.
The incident has raised concerns over the durability and monitoring of infrastructure projects carried out under government schemes, with locals demanding quick intervention to prevent any possible disaster.
