Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) Backward Classes Department president and Legislative Council Member D. T. Srinivas said the growing awareness around the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls has created concern within the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Speaking to reporters after a review meeting of the Backward Classes Department’s SIR activities at the Tourist Lodge in Shivamogga, Srinivas said the voter list revision process is progressing rapidly across the state. He credited the efforts of the party’s Booth Level Agents (BLAs) for helping create awareness and support the process.
Srinivas said nine days have passed since the revision exercise began and that the meeting was organised to review the progress in Shivamogga district. He claimed that awareness programmes in the district have been conducted successfully.
He alleged that the SIR process was initiated by the BJP, but some BJP leaders have now started opposing it after seeing its implementation in Karnataka. According to him, the party is worried that an effective voter list revision process could benefit the Congress.
Srinivas acknowledged that some shortcomings exist in the revision process but said Congress workers are prepared to address issues. He added that booth-level committees have been formed by the Backward Classes Department to assist in the process and ensure that no eligible voter is removed from the electoral rolls.
He said these committees will include at least three women members and a total of 11 or more members who will work indirectly in supporting the SIR exercise.
Srinivas said the process is being carried out on a large scale across Karnataka. While rural areas may not face major difficulties, urban areas, especially municipal corporation limits, could present some challenges.
He also claimed that BJP leaders are concerned about several Bengaluru constituencies due to increased voter awareness. He said further large-scale awareness meetings will be organised in Shivamogga to educate people about the SIR process.
Srinivas added that the Congress would also support the nationwide “Chhatron Ki Goonj” campaign related to alleged irregularities in the NEET examination, aimed at protecting education and students’ future.
