India and China have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral ties, with senior officials holding discussions on expanding cooperation in trade, economic engagement and people-to-people exchanges. The meeting underscored both countries’ intention to implement the shared vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping for stable, constructive and mutually beneficial relations.

The discussions took place during an introductory meeting between India’s Ambassador to China, Vikram Doraiswami, and China’s Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hua Chunying, on Monday. According to the Embassy of India in China, both sides agreed to intensify efforts to translate the vision of their leaders into practical outcomes that benefit the people of both nations.

In a statement shared on social media, the Indian Embassy said the two officials exchanged views on expanding bilateral cooperation across trade, the economy and people-to-people interactions. The discussions reflected a continued effort to improve engagement between the neighbouring countries following recent diplomatic initiatives aimed at stabilising relations.

The Embassy also noted that Ambassador Doraiswami welcomed Vice Minister Hua’s assurance that China would support India’s Presidency of the BRICS grouping. The assurance highlights the importance both countries attach to cooperation within multilateral institutions despite differences on several bilateral issues.

The latest diplomatic engagement follows a series of high-level interactions between India and China over the past few months. Last month, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi and expressed Beijing’s willingness to work closely with India to implement the important understandings reached by the leaders of the two countries.

According to Chinese officials, Wang Yi emphasised the need to continuously enhance mutual trust, address misunderstandings, properly manage sensitive issues and deepen mutually beneficial cooperation. He said sustained engagement would help maintain the positive momentum in bilateral relations while supporting the modernisation goals of both countries.

Wang Yi also highlighted the broader international role of India and China, describing the two nations as the largest developing economies and influential members of the Global South. He said both countries should play a leading role in promoting solidarity, self-reliance and cooperation among developing nations while contributing to global economic growth and stability.

China also reiterated its support for India’s role as the rotating Chair of BRICS. Chinese Ambassador to India Xu Feihong stated that Beijing was ready to work with New Delhi to advance meaningful progress in BRICS cooperation while strengthening coordination on regional and international issues of common interest.
