MUMBAI
Maharashtra is launching a bold plan to fight pollution and become a major green manufacturing hub. The government has officially approved the Maharashtra Bioplastics Policy 2026. Running until 2031, this project aims to turn the state into a national center for eco-friendly plastic research, production, and global exports.
Officials expect the new policy to bring in ₹25,000 crore in investments and create over 130,000 jobs. It aims to manufacture 200,000 tonnes of bioplastics every year, cutting India’s reliance on costly imports by half. The state also wants to swap 30 percent of single-use plastics for compostable alternatives and connect 100,000 local farmers to the supply chain.
To back this mission, the cabinet cleared a large fund of ₹10,892 crore. Maharashtra has a massive advantage because it already leads the country in sugar and ethanol production. This provides plenty of natural raw materials, like sugarcane and corn, to make biodegradable plastics. Currently, India creates less than one percent of the world’s bioplastics, making this shift highly urgent.
To attract businesses, the state is offering excellent rewards. The first two massive projects that invest ₹3,000 crore or more will receive heavy tax breaks, cheap electricity, and cash subsidies. Extra benefits will go to companies that use renewable energy or save water. By building industrial parks and top-tier research centers, Maharashtra is setting a fast pace to become India’s cleanest, most sustainable economy.
