Embolo’s strike sets up comfortable victory

Switzerland comfortably defeated Algeria 2-0 to reach the World Cup Round of 16, securing their third consecutive tournament victory through goals from Embolo and Ndoye.

VANCOUVER

Switzerland put on a fantastic show, defeating Algeria 2-0 at BC Place to comfortably secure their spot in the World Cup Round of 16.

Key goals from Breel Embolo and Dan Ndoye powered the Swiss team to victory. Although Algeria played well during parts of the first half, Ndoye’s quick goal right after halftime completely destroyed their confidence. From that moment on, Algeria never really looked like making a comeback.

This major win means Switzerland has now won three World Cup matches in a row for the very first time. This hot streak includes earlier group-stage victories against Canada and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Switzerland took control very early, scoring in the tenth minute. Johan Manzambi made a brilliant run into the box and passed the ball back to Embolo, who easily tapped it in.

The Swiss team struck again just seconds into the second half. Denis Zakaria sent in a cross that the Algerian defense failed to clear properly. The ball fell to Ndoye, who calmly picked his spot from the edge of the box and fired it home.

Algeria faced a massive hill to climb, especially since Switzerland had lost only one of their last seventeen games. The Algerian attackers could not break through the solid Swiss defense. Switzerland has now reached the knockout stage for the fourth tournament in a row. They will stay in Vancouver to face either Colombia or Ghana on July 7.
