Commercial renewable energy to reach 100 gw, say reports

NEW DELHI

India’s commercial and industrial renewable energy capacity is set to skyrocket from 32 gigawatts to 100 gigawatts by 2032. A new report reveals that green energy storage systems will also leap tenfold to 31 gigawatt-hours, driven by corporate green goals and rising electricity costs.

The upcoming India Energy Storage Week 2026 exhibition in New Delhi will officially release these findings. The event will bring together government officials, regulators, and industry leaders to solve policy bottlenecks and accelerate India’s transition toward cleaner, more resilient power sources.

State-level policy innovations are major drivers of this explosive growth. For instance, Maharashtra now mandates energy storage for all new renewable projects above 100 kilowatts. Other major states like Gujarat, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Rajasthan are also speeding up green adoption by removing transmission charges and introducing helpful billing policies.

Heavy industries will remain the biggest users of these massive battery storage systems, using them to ensure uninterrupted operations. Meanwhile, data centers and critical public infrastructure, including hospitals, airports, and metro stations, will see the fastest growth in clean energy adoption.

Experts note that energy storage is no longer just a simple backup plan, it has become a strategic tool for corporate survival and carbon reduction. This current clean energy momentum is expected to completely redefine India’s industrial sector over the next decade.
