NEW DELHI
Union Minister Piyush Goyal announced that fresh litchis grown in Punjab have been exported to Oman for the very first time.
The initial shipment of the sweet fruit was produced by the Ummat Agri Allied Cooperative Society based in Hoshiarpur. Taking to media platforms, the Commerce and Industry Minister praised the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) for making this possible. Goyal explained that by leveraging the brand-new India–Oman free trade agreement, this unique trade initiative will successfully boost local farmers’ incomes and secure wider international fame for Indian agriculture.
This achievement comes closely on the heels of another fruit export milestone. Just last month, Goyal celebrated the first-ever shipment of Uttarakhand’s beloved Dehradun litchis to Italy. He noted that the premium, red fruits highly praised for their distinct sweetness and delicate aroma are quickly becoming a favorite in Europe, effectively opening new trade gateways into European markets.
India’s global litchi expansion also includes the northeastern region. Earlier, Assam’s famous Tezpur litchi, which earned a Geographical Indication tag back in 2014 due to its excellent juicy quality, made its international debut with a successful shipment sent to Dubai.
Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the central government is working hard to maximize the unique horticulture potential of different Indian states. By connecting hardworking regional farmers directly with profitable fresh-fruit markets across the globe, the government ensures better earnings while establishing India as a trusted supplier of premium produce.
