Dog squad conducts narcotics search in courier offices

Bhatkal

A dog squad along with police personnel conducted a detailed inspection at courier service centres and post offices in Bhatkal of Uttara Kannada district on Tuesday, as part of intensified efforts to detect and prevent the movement of narcotic substances through parcel networks.

The operation focused on identifying suspicious consignments that could potentially contain banned drugs or psychotropic substances concealed within routine courier packages. Officials said the drive was carried out based on inputs suggesting that courier and postal channels are increasingly being misused for illegal drug transportation.

Specially trained sniffer dogs were deployed to scan parcels, storage areas and sorting sections in multiple courier offices as well as the local post office. The canine units helped authorities efficiently screen large volumes of packages that would otherwise require time-consuming manual inspection.

Police officials said that logistics networks such as courier services and postal departments have become vulnerable points in drug trafficking routes. As a result, surveillance and inspection activities have been strengthened across Uttara Kannada district in recent months. Similar operations in other regions have previously resulted in the seizure of contraband substances hidden in packaged goods.

During the inspection, police teams also interacted with courier staff and post office employees, instructing them to remain alert and report any suspicious or unclaimed parcels immediately to authorities. They emphasised the importance of cooperation between enforcement agencies and service providers in preventing illegal activities.

Authorities added that public awareness and vigilance are crucial in tackling drug-related crimes, which often operate through discreet and evolving methods. Citizens were also urged to inform police if they notice unusual parcel activity or suspect misuse of courier services.

Officials said further verification and follow-up investigations will be conducted based on findings from the inspection drive. They reiterated that surveillance operations will continue as part of ongoing efforts to curb narcotics trafficking and maintain law and order in the region.
