Coast Guard rescues stranded fishermen off coast safely

Mangaluru

The Indian Coast Guard rescued six fishermen stranded in the Arabian Sea off the Mangaluru coast after their fishing boat was damaged by rough weather and began taking in water. All six were brought ashore safely following a swift search and rescue operation.

The incident occurred on Monday when the fishing boat IFB Manju Matha encountered turbulent sea conditions and high waves while operating off the Karnataka coast. The vessel sustained damage during the rough weather, causing seawater to enter the boat and placing the crew in danger.

Realising the gravity of the situation, the fishermen sent out a distress call seeking immediate assistance from the Indian Coast Guard.

Responding without delay, the Coast Guard launched a rescue mission using its vessel ICGS Sachet. Rescue personnel quickly reached the location and safely evacuated all six fishermen using remote-operated lifesaving devices, including lifebuoys. The operation was completed successfully despite challenging sea conditions.

According to Coast Guard officials, the rescued fishermen were transported to the New Mangalore Port, where they underwent medical examination and received necessary treatment. After confirming that all six were safe and in stable condition, the Coast Guard handed them over to the local authorities for further assistance.

Officials said the prompt response of the Coast Guard prevented a potentially serious maritime accident and ensured the safety of the fishermen. They also urged fishing communities to closely monitor weather advisories before venturing into the sea, particularly during the monsoon season when rough sea conditions and high waves pose significant risks to small fishing vessels.

The Indian Coast Guard regularly conducts surveillance and rescue operations along India’s coastline to safeguard fishermen and other seafarers. Authorities reiterated their commitment to ensuring maritime safety through rapid response mechanisms and appealed to fishermen to immediately report emergencies through established distress communication channels to facilitate timely rescue operations.
