Shivamogga police destroy huge cannabis haul

District police destroyed 60kg of seized ganja, marking a major success in their six-month anti-drug campaign, while also implementing new testing measures in local colleges.

SHIVAMOGGA

The district police have launched a massive crackdown on illegal drugs, marking a significant victory in their ongoing “war against cannabis.” District Superintendent of Police B. Nikhil announced that nearly 60 kilograms of dried ganja, valued at over Rs 24 lakhs, has been seized and officially destroyed. This haul follows a rigorous six-month operation running from January 1 to June 26. During this time, police registered 31 smuggling cases and over 1,400 consumption cases across the district.

“We are using every tool available to stop this,” SP Nikhil stated. The department is now utilizing drone cameras to monitor suspected cultivation areas. Furthermore, the police have intensified their focus on educational institutions. After testing students at 21 colleges, authorities found three positive cases and have since mandated that all future college admission forms include a consent clause for drug testing. The police have also successfully tracked supply lines leading from Andhra Pradesh and Odisha, resulting in the arrest of eight major suppliers now held in custody.

The department is urging the public to stay involved in the “Drug-Free Karnataka” campaign. Citizens can report illegal drug sales via WhatsApp at 8277982900, the 1908 helpline, or the 1933 counseling line. The SP guaranteed that all informant identities would remain strictly confidential. In a final warning to troublemakers, the police added that they are now taking FIRs against anyone caught wheeling or triple-riding on motorcycles based on public-submitted photos.
