INGLEWOOD
The 2026 FIFA World Cup has officially entered the history books as the highest-scoring tournament ever. The milestone was reached during a thrilling Group D clash between the United States and Turkey.
Auston Trusty’s early goal for the U.S. marked the 173rd strike of the competition, officially eclipsing the previous record of 172 goals set during the 2022 tournament in Qatar. The match eventually ended in a dramatic 3-2 victory for Turkey, pushing the tournament’s total tally to 177 goals by the final whistle.
What makes this achievement particularly impressive is the speed at which it was reached. While the 2022 record required the full duration of all 64 matches, the 2026 tournament hit this new high in just 59 games.
This year’s World Cup features a major expansion, with FIFA increasing the field from 32 to 48 teams, resulting in a total of 104 matches. With nearly half of the tournament still to be played, fans can expect the goal-scoring record to be pushed significantly higher before the final in July.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino celebrated the news on media, noting that the high volume of goals highlights the attacking talent and pure excitement characterizing this year’s expanded format. As teams continue to battle it out on the pitch, the 2026 edition is quickly cementing its reputation as one of the most action-packed and high-scoring tournaments in football history.
