SDPI slams Maharashtra government over seizure of areca nut trucks

MANGALURU

The Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) has strongly condemned the detention of over 50 trucks carrying areca nuts (betel nuts) from Karnataka by the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The party has demanded immediate intervention from the state and central governments to secure the release of the vehicles and ensure smooth trade transit.

In a press statement, SDPI Mangaluru Rural District Vice President Inas Rodrigues stated that the abrupt seizure of trucks has caused severe anxiety among areca nut growers and traders across Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and neighboring districts. He noted that betel nut traders contribute significantly to the government exchequer through hefty Goods and Services Tax (GST) payments, and this aggressive move by Maharashtra is heavily damaging the revenues of both Karnataka and the Centre.

The dispute stems from the Maharashtra FDA claiming that the natural “chogar” color (a traditional extract coating applied during boiling and processing) is an artificial chemical additive. Denouncing the blockade, Rodrigues pointed out that the trucks were merely in transit through Maharashtra to northern states and possessed all legitimate documents. He went on to describe the action as a violation of India’s federal principles, comparing the economic disruption to blocking global oil routes through the Strait of Hormuz.

The blockade has already severely impacted the market, forcing several transport companies to halt areca nut cargo entirely. Local traders are worried about how to fulfill purchases, warning that if the crisis continues, they may be forced to shut down their processing units (garbals). This would trigger massive unemployment for thousands of local wage laborers and push farmers who are already battling leaf spot disease, yellow leaf disease, and plunging market prices into absolute financial ruin.

Rodrigues heavily criticized the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) representatives, noting that despite the BJP being in power at the Centre and sharing power in Maharashtra, all 17 BJP MPs elected from Karnataka have shown zero willpower to coordinate a resolution. Warning of intense upcoming street agitations, the SDPI demanded that both governments step in immediately to release the impounded trucks and safeguard the livelihoods of the coastal region’s agrarian community.
