SEATTLE
Australia football coach Tony Popovic took aim at the refereeing after the Socceroos fell 2-0 to the United States in a heated World Cup clash. The defeat allowed the American co-hosts to march straight into the knockout Round of 32.
The big talking point happened just before halftime. US player Alex Freeman scored a header, which was first called offside. However, the video assistant referee (VAR) reversed the call. This sparked heavy protests from Australian players who felt their goalkeeper was blocked.
Popovic did not hold back after the whistle, suggesting German referee Felix Zwayer had a poor game. Yet, the coach honestly admitted his team started too slowly against the energized hosts. He noted his players looked heavy-legged and lost too many battles on the field during the first half.
The match ended in chaos. Tempers flared late in the game, leading to a fiery showdown between Australia’s Harry Souttar and American star Folarin Balogun. The referee had to step in, ultimately handing out seven yellow cards across both teams. In a bizarre twist, the referee himself collapsed with muscle cramps late in the match and needed help from players.
With this crucial victory, the United States sits comfortably at the top of Group D with six points. Australia remains in second place with three points, keeping their tournament hopes alive but leaving them with plenty of work to do before their final group match.
