New Delhi

India’s annual defence production has surged to ₹1.78 lakh crore in 2025–26, marking a significant milestone in the country’s push toward self-reliance in the defence sector.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said the “remarkable rise” in domestic defence manufacturing reflects the combined efforts of the Ministry of Defence, public sector undertakings, private industry, and startups contributing to the broader ecosystem.

According to official estimates, the sharp increase in output highlights India’s accelerating progress under the “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” initiative, which aims to reduce dependency on imports and strengthen indigenous capabilities across land, air, and naval systems.

Over the past several years, defence production has expanded steadily due to policy reforms, increased private sector participation, and greater emphasis on indigenisation. The sector has also benefited from simplified procurement procedures and incentives for local manufacturing.

Officials noted that a growing share of defence equipment is now being produced domestically, ranging from artillery systems and combat vehicles to advanced electronics and aerospace components. This shift has also supported the development of a wider supply chain ecosystem involving micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

The government has also focused on boosting defence exports, which have grown alongside domestic production. India is increasingly supplying equipment to friendly foreign nations, reflecting improved competitiveness of its defence industry.

Experts say the rise in production not only strengthens national security but also contributes to economic growth by generating employment, encouraging technological innovation, and attracting investment into high-tech manufacturing.

The defence sector is expected to remain a key pillar of India’s industrial strategy, with continued emphasis on modernization, research and development, and public-private collaboration.

Officials believe that sustaining this momentum will be crucial for meeting future security challenges while positioning India as a major global defence manufacturing hub in the coming years.
