Karnataka Kalaripayattu Association and Kalaripayattu Council of Karnataka organised the district-level sub-junior, junior, senior and super senior Kalari Payattu Games at STRIDE Badminton Stadium, Kada Agrahara, Sompura, Anekal on Sunday.
The Kalaripayattu sports competition was inaugurated by Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee Vice President and Karnataka State Bioenergy Development Board Chairman SE Sudhindra and Chief Minister’s Special Officer Dr Vaishnavi Kuppuswamy.
The Chairman of the Board, in his inaugural speech, said that Chief Minister DK Shivakumar is giving special encouragement to sports in the State and recently announced a grant of Rs 10 lakh to establish youth clubs in the name of Bharat Jodo to encourage the youth of the State to develop cultural, sports and leadership skills. He said that the State government has encouraged this sport by giving first, second and third prizes of Rs. 5, 3 and 2 lakhs to the winners of this Kalaripayattu tournament for the last two to three years.
Chief Minister’s special officer Dr Vaishnavi Kuppaswamy, who is herself a Kalaripayattu athlete and a gold medalist in the super senior’s category, wished all the participating athletes the best. She said that there is a need to introduce the sport of Kalaripayattu to the youth at a young age and create interest in this sport among students.
Lieutenant Air Defense Poontura Soman, Srijith K Surendranath, athletes, and sports fans were present at the event.
