Heavy vehicle ban imposed on Agumbe Ghat route

Shivamogga

The district administration has imposed a ban on the movement of heavy vehicles on the Agumbe Ghat stretch of National Highway 169A from June 15 until the end of the monsoon season, citing safety concerns due to heavy rainfall and increased risk of landslides.

The order was issued by Deputy Commissioner Prabhuling Kavalikatti, who directed that all goods-laden and other heavy vehicles must use alternative routes during this period to avoid disruptions and ensure public safety.

According to the administration, the decision was taken after continued heavy vehicle movement on the Thirthahalli–Malpe–Udupi route through Agumbe Ghat raised concerns about road safety. Authorities warned that sustained traffic pressure during the monsoon could increase the risk of landslides, roadside erosion and accidents along the ghat section.

The situation has been further complicated by ongoing temporary repair and protective works on the nearby Hulikal Ghat route, which connects Shivamogga with Kundapura and Udupi via Hosanagara and Mastikatte. As this alternate route is not fully operational, more heavy vehicles have been diverted to Agumbe Ghat, increasing traffic density.

Officials also highlighted the importance of maintaining uninterrupted connectivity to key medical hubs such as Manipal, Udupi and Mangaluru. The disruption of this route could affect residents of Shivamogga, Davanagere, Chitradurga and Haveri districts who frequently travel for healthcare and essential services.

To manage traffic flow, the administration has announced designated alternative routes for heavy vehicles. Those travelling from Thirthahalli to Udupi have been advised to use Thirthahalli–Nagar–Nagodi–Kollur–Kundapura–Udupi or Thirthahalli–Sringeri–Kerekatte–Bajagoli–Karkala–Udupi routes.

Similarly, vehicles moving from Udupi towards Thirthahalli must follow reverse directions through the same alternate corridors.

Authorities said the restriction is a precautionary measure aimed at preventing accidents and ensuring safe travel for commuters during the monsoon season.
