Residents of Marktweg transform neighbourhood into vibrant celebration of national pride.
The Hague
As the Netherlands prepares for its opening match at the FIFA World Cup, football fever has taken over parts of the country, with one street in The Hague standing out as a dazzling display of national pride drenched entirely in orange.
On Marktweg Street, residents have transformed their neighbourhood into a sea of colour, covering homes, trees, lamp posts and fences with orange decorations in support of the Dutch national team. From fluttering flags to painted façades, the street has become a symbol of collective enthusiasm ahead of the global tournament.
The vibrant transformation is not limited to decorations alone. Lions, a national symbol of the Netherlands, feature prominently throughout the street, often depicted wearing the iconic orange jersey of the national team, affectionately known as “Oranje”. The result is a striking visual tribute that reflects the deep connection between football and Dutch identity.
At one intersection, a small caravan painted in red, white and blue stands out amid the overwhelming orange theme. Marked as the “Hague Orange Campsite”, it has become a meeting point for fans and residents who have contributed to the weeks-long effort of decorating the area.
Local organiser Danny van Dijk said the initiative has been met with widespread appreciation from the community. “So far, we haven’t encountered anyone who said they don’t like it or complain about it. Up to now, we’ve only heard positive things,” he said, highlighting the spirit of unity driving the project.
The Netherlands will begin its World Cup campaign against Japan in Dallas before facing Sweden in Houston and Tunisia in Kansas City during the group stage. The tournament has sparked excitement across the country, with fans preparing to follow their team’s journey across the United States.
Members of the Dutch royal family, including the king, queen and crown princess, are expected to attend the match against Sweden, further underlining the national significance of the event.
Despite never having won the World Cup, the Netherlands has reached the final three times, in 1974, 1978 and 2010, cementing its reputation as one of football’s most consistent contenders.
For visitors like amateur photographer Rob van Rosmalen, the transformation of Marktweg is a testament to community spirit. “The street is beautifully decorated. All that orange. That must have been a huge task,” he said, praising the cooperation among neighbours that has turned the area into a festive landmark.
