S J Somashekar chairs narcotics coordination meeting

R N Bindumani said police registered 186 NDPS cases against people involved in sale, transport, consumption of narcotics

Deputy Commissioner S J Somashekar instructed officials to strictly implement the Drug Free Campus policy in all schools and colleges of the district. He spoke while chairing the district level Narcotics Coordination Committee meeting held at the Deputy Commissioner’s office hall. Officials reviewed previous meeting points from April 2026 and discussed action taken by departments.

District Superintendent of Police R N Bindumani said police have registered 186 NDPS cases against those involved in sale transportation and consumption of narcotic substances in the district. Police officials are visiting schools and colleges to spread awareness on drug abuse and legal consequences through programs street plays and marathon rallies. Police are monitoring repeat drug peddlers while officials stressed need for rehabilitation center in the district for treatment of addicts.

District Health and Family Welfare Officer Dr Satish Kumar said rehabilitation center can be started if government building or private facility is available. Deputy Commissioner said rehabilitation centers function in all districts and funds will be arranged to establish one in Kodagu district. Officials informed that a temporary de addiction center has been set up at district hospital and details shared with police. Health officials said drug test kits supplied to primary health centers are being used and more kits will be supplied regularly.

Sub Divisional Officer Nithin Chakki said tourism revenue and police departments are conducting surprise inspections at homestays resorts and hotels employing workers from other states. Education department officials said steps are being taken to guide colleges and principals to obtain undertaking letters from parents on drug prevention.

Special lectures workshops and interaction programs will be organized for students and teachers will be trained to identify addiction signs. Excise department is inspecting liquor shops bars clubs and resorts regularly and conducting joint operations with police.

Social Welfare Department Deputy Director Shekhar said awareness programs are conducted for hostel students and health check ups and drug tests are also done. Several officials from different departments attended the meeting and the Deputy Commissioner urged strict cooperation from all agencies to make district drug free successfully and effectively efforts.
