Srinivaspur
Srinivaspur in Kolar district is seeing rising attention this season as the rare Israeli-origin Maya mango variety attracts strong interest from farmers and buyers. The fruit grown in Hogalgere village has become popular for its sweet taste, rich aroma and premium quality in local markets.
Officials from Srinivaspur Mango Development Centre say the Maya mango saplings were first introduced in 2016 as part of experimental trials involving foreign varieties. The variety adapted well to local soil and climate conditions and showed strong growth and fruit bearing potential in early stages.
Nearly 200 trees are now in productive stage and have given good harvest this year. Prices for the fruit have reached between 100 to 500 rupees per kilogram in the market. Experts say the Maya mango stands out for its unique sweetness, flavour and fragrance compared to traditional varieties.
Srinivaspur officials say the soil and climate in the region are highly suitable for Maya mango cultivation and expect production to increase in the coming years due to better flowering. Farmers are increasingly interested in adopting this variety after seeing strong demand, good prices and positive results compared to traditional mango types in local markets. Currently cultivation is mostly limited to Srinivaspur but awareness is spreading across Karnataka state wide. Experts believe the variety could become an important commercial crop if expanded carefully with proper guidance and support from horticulture departments.
