Tearful Kostyuk Overcomes Emotional Ordeal to Reach French Open Second Round

Paris

Ukrainian tennis player Marta Kostyuk produced one of the most courageous performances of her career at the French Open after overcoming deep emotional distress to reach the second round at Roland Garros.

The 15th seed defeated Oksana Selekhmeteva 6-2, 6-3 on Sunday, but revealed afterward that she had learned earlier in the day that a missile strike had narrowly missed her parents’ home in Ukraine.

Speaking during an emotional post-match interview, the 23-year-old fought back tears as she described the difficult circumstances she faced before stepping onto the court.

According to Kostyuk, a missile destroyed a building just 100 metres from her family’s residence. Her mother, sister and great-aunt were among 17 people in the house at the time of the attack, but fortunately escaped unharmed.

“This was one of the most difficult matches of my career,” Kostyuk said. “I spent part of the morning crying because I couldn’t stop thinking about what might have happened.”

The Ukrainian admitted she felt physically sick after receiving the news and struggled to focus on tennis. Despite the emotional burden, she decided to compete, drawing inspiration from the resilience shown daily by people in her war-torn homeland.

After securing victory, Kostyuk received warm applause from spectators. As she addressed the crowd, she became emotional once again while explaining how Ukrainians continue to persevere despite immense hardships.

“My biggest example is the Ukrainian people,” she said. “I woke up and saw people continuing with their lives and helping others despite everything they face.”

Kostyuk’s victory was one of several notable results on the opening day of the tournament. In the evening session, 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic defeated Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in four sets to register another milestone victory.

Elsewhere, second seed Alexander Zverev advanced comfortably, while former US Open champion Emma Raducanu suffered an early exit.

Kostyuk will next face American Katie Volynets for a place in the third round. However, regardless of what follows, her first-round triumph will be remembered as a testament to extraordinary resilience and determination in the face of personal anguish and uncertainty.
