Royals target fearless cricket against powerful Sunrisers Hyderabad in Eliminator clash
Mumbai
Rajasthan Royals Director of Cricket Kumar Sangakkara has urged his team to adopt a more aggressive approach when they face Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL 2026 Eliminator at Mullanpur on May 27, following their playoff-clinching victory over Mumbai Indians.
The Royals secured the fourth and final playoff berth with a convincing 30-run win over Mumbai Indians, but Sangakkara believes a tougher challenge awaits against an SRH side renowned for its fearless and explosive batting.
The former Sri Lankan captain acknowledged that his side would have to raise its intensity levels against a team that has consistently attacked bowlers throughout the tournament.
“They are a very good side and have trusted their aggressive style all season. We know what we are going to face, and we have to be disciplined while also being aggressive with our lines and lengths,” Sangakkara said.
He stressed that even defensive tactics such as slower balls and good-length deliveries must be executed with attacking intent against Sunrisers, who possess one of the most dangerous batting line-ups in the competition.
Sangakkara also provided an update on all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, revealing that the veteran is managing an injury and requires at least two days of rest before returning to full fitness. Despite the physical strain, Jadeja contributed significantly against Mumbai and once again demonstrated his value to the side.
The Royals mentor reserved special praise for captain Riyan Parag, who has faced criticism throughout much of his career. Sangakkara said the franchise remains fully committed to backing the young skipper and helping him develop as both a leader and a player.
“He has captained exceptionally well and has the respect of everyone in the dressing room. What people see from the outside is often not the real Riyan Parag. He is intelligent, determined and a very good young man,” Sangakkara said.
He added that Rajasthan Royals view Parag as a long-term leadership prospect and will continue supporting his growth in the coming years.
Sangakkara also confirmed that pacer Jofra Archer’s decision to remain in the IPL instead of joining England’s Test preparations was made jointly by the player, the England and Wales Cricket Board and the franchise, allowing him additional time to build his bowling workload.
With momentum on their side, the Royals now turn their attention to a high-pressure Eliminator where aggression and execution could determine their fate.
