RR skipper’s bold decisions and Archer’s brilliance seal playoff berth
Mumbai
Rajasthan Royals captain Riyan Parag credited a series of bold tactical decisions and instinctive leadership for his team’s dramatic entry into the IPL 2026 playoffs after a convincing 30-run victory over Mumbai Indians.
The Royals posted a competitive 205 for eight before restricting Mumbai Indians to 175 for nine, securing the final playoff spot and eliminating Punjab Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders from the tournament.
Parag said he prefers trusting his instincts over statistics when making crucial decisions on the field.
“I’ve taken a lot of brave calls this season, that’s how I like to lead. I thought only Jofra Archer could get Hardik Pandya, and that’s what happened. I always trust my instincts in real-time situations,” Parag said.
One of those decisions proved decisive as Archer was promoted up the batting order and responded with a quickfire 32 off 15 balls. The England pacer then starred with the ball, claiming three wickets for 17 runs, including the prized scalps of Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya, earning the Player of the Match award.
Parag admitted that while the result was satisfying, the team still had areas to improve. He explained that the decision to reshuffle the batting order was aimed at maintaining scoring momentum and ensuring experienced batters stayed longer at the crease.
The Royals skipper also revealed that he was not fully fit and had initially been advised to miss the match. However, he expressed confidence about returning for the playoffs and praised Archer and Ravindra Jadeja for their fighting spirit.
Rajasthan Royals Director of Cricket Kumar Sangakkara applauded the bowlers for executing their plans under pressure. He said the decision to promote Archer was a calculated gamble based on the all-rounder’s ability to change games quickly.
Sangakkara also praised young spinner Yash Raj Punja, who impressed with two wickets against a strong Mumbai batting line-up.
Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya felt his side conceded 10 to 15 runs too many and paid the price for losing wickets regularly during the chase.
With momentum on their side, Rajasthan Royals now head into the playoffs believing they can challenge for the IPL 2026 title.
