BWSSB gains global honor for water excellence

The Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Board BWSSB has brought international recognition to India by securing a place among the Top 5 water utilities in the world at the Global Water Summit 2026 held in Madrid Spain The achievement marks a major milestone for Bengaluru in urban water management and sustainable development practices

BWSSB is the only Indian water utility to be recognized in three major global categories at the summit The organisation was praised for its innovative “Five Pillars” model which focuses on water conservation wastewater recycling reuse infrastructure development and sustainable governance systems These efforts were highlighted as a strong contribution towards achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 6 which aims to ensure clean water and sanitation for all people

At the global event BWSSB was placed alongside leading water utilities from countries such as Chile Malaysia Brazil and other nations in the sustainability category It was also ranked among the Top 5 utilities of the year along with major organisations from the United States Brazil and Saudi Arabia The recognition was based on its performance in water supply sanitation technology use infrastructure growth and overall service management over the past three years

The board’s Cauvery Stage V drinking water project designed to meet Bengaluru’s growing water demand was also selected among the Top 5 global water projects It stood alongside major infrastructure projects from China India Philippines and Serbia showing Bengaluru’s rise in global water innovation and planning

BWSSB Chairman Dr Ram Prasath Manohar represented the organisation at the summit and held discussions with global experts on urban water solutions He said the recognition reflects Bengaluru’s commitment to sustainable water management under the guidance of the state leadership He added that the board continues to focus on long term solutions using technology driven planning and efficient service delivery to meet future needs

International delegates appreciated Bengaluru’s efforts in handling water challenges in a fast growing city and described it as a model for other urban centres worldwide

Officials said the achievement strengthens Bengaluru’s global image and supports its goal of becoming a sustainable water secure city through continuous innovation improved infrastructure and citizen focused governance across all water services in the coming years.
