MLC Hemalatha Nayaka said horticulture crops were damaged and urged government support, noting farmers face severe financial distress after crop losses
Koppal
BJP leaders in Koppal on Sunday demanded that the Karnataka government provide compensation of Rs 5 lakh per acre to farmers whose crops were damaged due to untimely rains in different parts of the district.
The leaders visited Hosahalli, Muddaballi and Hatti villages along with farmers and inspected damaged banana, sugarcane and other agricultural crops spread across hundreds of acres.
Former BJP Lok Sabha candidate Dr. Basavaraj S Cavator said farmers had spent lakhs of rupees cultivating crops but sudden rains completely destroyed their fields. He said the current government compensation of Rs 22,500 per acre is inadequate and does not cover farmers’ losses.
He pointed out that many farmers had taken agricultural land on lease by paying nearly Rs 1.5 lakh annually and spent additional money on cultivation and maintenance. He demanded that the government immediately increase compensation to Rs 5 lakh per acre.
MLC Hemalatha Nayaka also said horticulture crops were badly damaged and urged the government not to ignore the suffering of farmers. She said farmers who provide food to society are facing severe financial distress after crop losses.
Several BJP leaders and local representatives joined the visit along with hundreds of farmers and party workers.
During the interaction, leaders also recalled earlier crop losses caused by canal damage near Basapur where compensation is still pending. They warned that farmers may launch protests if relief is not provided immediately.
BJP leaders said the government should conduct quick surveys and release higher compensation without delay to support affected farmers and prevent further financial hardship in rural areas. They added that timely assistance is necessary to protect farmers from debt and help them continue agricultural activities during the coming farming season across the district.
