Karnataka minister Lakshmi Hebbalkar questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the precautionary measures adopted by the Union government, asking him to clearly explain what actions had been taken instead of merely advising citizens on what they should avoid doing.
Hebbalkar said people across the country were repeatedly being told what not to do during sensitive situations, but the Centre had failed to communicate the preventive measures implemented at the national level. She stated that citizens had a right to know how the government was preparing itself and protecting public interests.
The minister remarked that issuing warnings and instructions alone would not reassure the public unless the government also shared details of concrete administrative steps and safety measures. According to her, transparency in governance becomes especially important during times of uncertainty and public concern.
Hebbalkar also criticised what she described as selective communication by the Centre, alleging that the government often shifted responsibility onto citizens while avoiding accountability regarding its own preparedness. She maintained that effective governance required both public cooperation and visible action from authorities.
During the interaction, the minister urged the Prime Minister to openly address the nation about the preventive strategies being implemented and the steps taken to avoid potential problems. She said such communication would help build confidence among citizens and reduce confusion.
Her remarks come amid continuing political exchanges between the ruling Congress government in Karnataka and the BJP-led Union government on issues related to administration, public safety, and governance.
Hebbalkar further stated that state governments were doing their part to maintain public confidence and ensure smooth administration. However, she stressed that coordinated efforts between the Centre and states were essential in dealing with any major challenge affecting people.
The minister’s comments have since triggered political reactions, with opposition leaders defending the Centre’s approach while Congress leaders backing Hebbalkar’s demand for greater clarity and accountability from the Union government regarding precautionary actions and preparedness measures.
