Vijayapur Minister M. B. Patil criticised MLA Yatnal’s remarks, sparking fresh political debate over hijab and religion.
Vijayapura
Karnataka Industries and District In-charge Minister M. B. Patil launched a sharp political attack on BJP leaders, including MLA Basanagouda Patil Yatnal, while addressing media persons in Vijayapur.
Reacting to renewed debates over the hijab issue and recent comments made by Yatnal, the minister strongly defended the state government’s stand on religious freedom. He said the Congress government treats all religions and communities equally and does not discriminate in matters of personal faith and cultural practices.
M. B. Patil stated that earlier controversies were unnecessarily created even over the use of religious symbols such as vibhuti, namam, janivara, and Shivling, and accused opposition leaders of politicising such sensitive issues. He added that students from all communities have the right to follow their traditions, but within the framework of equality and harmony in educational institutions.
Referring to Yatnal’s reported remarks about distributing saffron shawls in schools and colleges, the minister criticised him for making provocative statements. He alleged that such comments are aimed at gaining political mileage and creating unnecessary tensions in society.
In a sarcastic remark, Patil said that if Yatnal is so inclined to form a new political party, he would extend his support. Comparing the situation to actor Vijay’s political entry in Tamil Nadu, he remarked that Yatnal could even aspire to become Chief Minister through such a move.
He further alleged that Yatnal’s statements were part of an attempt to pressure the BJP leadership and secure political relevance, including a possible party ticket from Vijayapur. The minister’s comments have further intensified political debate in the region, especially amid ongoing discussions on the hijab issue and the use of religious symbols in schools and colleges across Karnataka.
