Mysuru

BJP MP Yaduveer Wadiyar has urged the Karnataka government to protect Mysuru’s Devaraja Market and Lansdowne Building following a recent Supreme Court direction. He said the court order is welcome and reflects the need to preserve heritage structures instead of demolishing them. He visited Devaraja Market after traders invited him and spoke to the media about conservation efforts. He recalled that local people have been demanding protection of the historic market since 2005 instead of demolition.

He urged the state government not to proceed with demolition appeals and instead focus on conservation work. He said funds planned for rebuilding could be used for restoration of both heritage structures in Mysuru. Traders at Devaraja Market have also expressed willingness to cooperate by adjusting their spaces for renovation work.

Yaduveer said many countries around the world have successfully preserved old markets while upgrading facilities. He added that it is not difficult to preserve such structures if there is strong political will. He also suggested developing additional markets in different parts of Mysuru as the city continues to grow. He said this approach can balance heritage conservation with modern urban needs and reduce pressure on central markets. Local traders welcomed his visit and expressed hope that the government will follow the Supreme Court direction. Yaduveer also wrote to the Chief Minister requesting that funds meant for demolition be redirected to restoration projects.

The issue has sparked long standing debate in Mysuru between redevelopment plans and heritage conservation supporters. He said the Supreme Court order gives a clear opportunity to protect the city’s cultural identity for future generations. He urged the government to act quickly and ensure that both buildings are restored with proper planning and expert guidance while maintaining their original design and historical value.

According to him, heritage protection will strengthen Mysuru’s identity as a cultural city and support tourism growth, while also preserving history in a rapidly developing urban environment, ensuring that future generations can experience the city’s traditional architecture and understand its historical importance clearly and meaningfully for all.
