Australian all-rounder also handed demerit points after breaching IPL conduct regulations during match.

Tim David of Royal Challengers Bengaluru was fined 30 per cent of his match fee and handed two demerit points for making an “obscene” gesture during the IPL 2026 match against Mumbai Indians, the league announced.
The incident occurred during RCB’s thrilling two-wicket victory over Mumbai Indians in a high-pressure contest that ended in dramatic fashion. While the exact nature of the gesture was not detailed by the IPL authorities, the league confirmed that the Australian all-rounder had breached Level 1 of the IPL Code of Conduct for Players and Team Officials.
“Tim was found to have breached Article 2.6 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct, which relates to using a gesture that is obscene, offensive or insulting,” an IPL media advisory stated.
The statement further added that David accepted the punishment without contesting the charge.
“Tim admitted to the offence and accepted the sanction imposed by Match Referee Amit Sharma,” the advisory said.
Under IPL regulations, Level 1 offences are considered relatively minor breaches, but repeated violations can attract stricter sanctions, including higher fines or suspension points. The addition of two demerit points means David will need to remain cautious through the remainder of the tournament.
The controversy came shortly after a tense encounter between RCB and Mumbai Indians, where Bengaluru held their nerve to secure a narrow victory and strengthen their playoff ambitions. David, known for his aggressive batting and energetic on-field presence, has been an important contributor for RCB this season.
Neither the player nor the franchise issued any separate statement regarding the incident after the IPL announcement.
The disciplinary action has nevertheless drawn attention as the IPL continues to maintain strict standards regarding player behaviour and on-field conduct. Match officials have consistently monitored player actions closely this season, particularly gestures or exchanges that could be deemed offensive or unsporting.
Despite the fine, David remains available for selection in RCB’s upcoming fixtures unless further disciplinary issues arise later in the tournament.
