NTA cancels NEET-UG 2026 amid ‘irregularities’

Intro

The decision was taken after reviewing inputs received from central agencies and law enforcement authorities regarding possible malpractice linked to the examination

New Delhi

The National Testing Agency (NTA) on Tuesday announced the cancellation of the NEET-UG 2026 examination conducted on May 3, citing alleged irregularities in the examination process.

In an official statement posted on the social media platform X, the NTA said the decision was taken after reviewing inputs received from central agencies and law enforcement authorities regarding possible malpractice linked to the examination. The agency stated that maintaining transparency and credibility in the national examination system was the primary reason behind the cancellation.

The NTA recalled that it had earlier issued a press release on May 10 and had already referred the matter to central agencies on May 8 for independent verification and necessary action. According to the agency, the move was consistent with its commitment to ensuring fair and secure conduct of examinations across the country.

The statement noted that investigative findings shared by law enforcement agencies raised serious concerns about the integrity of the examination process. After examining these findings in coordination with central authorities, the NTA concluded that the examination could not be allowed to stand in its current form.

With the approval of the Government of India, the National Testing Agency has decided to cancel the NEET (UG) 2026 examination conducted on May 3, 2026, and to re-conduct the examination on dates that will be notified separately, the statement said.

The Government of India has also decided to hand over the matter to the Central Bureau of Investigation for a comprehensive inquiry into the allegations surrounding the examination. The NTA stated that it would fully cooperate with the investigation and provide all necessary records, materials, and assistance required by the agency.

The examination body further informed candidates that details regarding the fresh examination schedule and re-issued admit cards would be communicated through official channels in the coming days. Students have been advised to regularly monitor official announcements for updates related to the revised examination process.

The cancellation has caused uncertainty and anxiety among lakhs of medical aspirants and their families across the country. However, the NTA maintained that the decision was necessary to protect the integrity, transparency, and credibility of one of India’s largest entrance examinations.
