Tension gripped Gulbarga University after Vice-Chancellor Shashikant S. Udikeri reportedly received an anonymous letter threatening him with an acid attack, prompting police to register a case and launch an investigation.
According to university sources, the Vice-Chancellor had recently exposed alleged irregularities in the evaluation process of the 2024 B.Ed examinations. An internal inquiry committee reportedly found evidence of manipulation and alteration of marks during the assessment process. The findings were later forwarded to the State Government and the Governor for further action.
Following the seriousness of the allegations, the Governor is said to have constituted a special inquiry committee headed by a retired judge. Based on the committee’s recommendations, a fresh revaluation of B.Ed examination papers is currently underway.
Police sources stated that the anonymous threat letter appears to be linked to dissatisfaction over the ongoing revaluation process. The letter allegedly claimed that certain candidates had paid nearly ₹2 lakh for B.Ed admission and had been waiting for results for two years. It further warned that if marks were reduced or candidates failed in the revaluation, the Vice-Chancellor would face an acid attack.
Concerned about the threat, Prof. Udikeri reportedly approached the court seeking legal protection. Following the court’s direction, the University Police Station registered a case and initiated an investigation to identify those responsible for the threatening communication.
Officials said the probe is focusing on tracing the origin of the letter and verifying whether individuals linked to the examination controversy are involved.
University authorities have expressed concern over the incident, stating that such threats undermine academic integrity and create fear within educational institutions. Police have assured that strict action will be taken against those responsible once identified.
