Bannerghatta Biological Park (BBP) has suffered a setback after Shivani, a young female giraffe and one of the park’s popular attractions, died following a sudden intestinal complication despite intensive veterinary treatment.
According to BBP officials, Shivani was aged three years and 10 months. The giraffe reportedly stopped consuming food on May 3, prompting veterinarians to closely monitor her condition and begin treatment immediately. However, despite several days of medical care, she failed to recover and died, officials said.
A postmortem examination conducted by veterinary experts revealed that Shivani died due to caecal torsion, a serious medical condition caused by twisting of a part of the intestine, leading to severe abdominal distress. Officials stated that visceral samples have been collected and sent to the Institute of Animal Health and Veterinary Biologicals laboratory in Hebbal for further analysis.
Shivani had been brought to Bannerghatta from Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens in 2024 after months of negotiations to provide companionship to the park’s lone giraffe, Gauri. Born in 2022 to giraffes Bharat and Babli at Mysuru zoo, Shivani was transported to Bengaluru in a specially designed multi-axle vehicle under special escort arrangements.
