LUCKNOW
Former India wicketkeeper Aditya Tare has lauded Rishabh Pant’s “masterful” leadership following Lucknow Super Giants’ (LSG) narrow nine-run victory against Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Despite facing immense pressure this season, Pant’s tactical gambles and clever bowling rotations proved to be the difference-maker at the Ekana Stadium.
Defending a massive 213 in a rain-shortened match, Pant faced a major test when he reached the 12th over without having used a fifth bowler. Tare pointed out that Pant’s decision to introduce Shahbaz Ahmed at that late stage was a stroke of genius, as the spinner rewarded his captain’s faith by claiming two vital wickets.
The biggest talking point, however, was the final over. Pant handed the ball to Digvesh Singh Rathi, a move many considered suicidal given that Rathi had already leaked 41 runs in his previous overs. Tare noted that Pant’s ability to back a struggling player in a high-stakes moment showed true captaincy. Rathi repaid the trust, using his googly to stifle the chase and secure the win.
The match also featured a standout performance from young pacer Prince Yadav, who dismissed Virat Kohli with a spectacular delivery. It was a historic moment, marking Kohli’s first dismissal in a 200-plus chase in nearly ten years. While the win was a major morale booster, LSG remains at the bottom of the points table. However, Tare believes that if Pant continues this proactive approach, the team’s luck could soon change.
