Koppal protest enters 190th day against pellet plant

Koppal

People’s groups in Koppal marked what they called the 190th day of protest against the Baldota MSPL pellet plant. They say the unit running since 2011 is causing pollution and harming health in many city wards. They demand closure of the factory and protection of drinking water sources like Basapura lake and Tungabhadra reservoir. They also want sponge iron units near Hirebaganal and Allahnagar shifted to safer locations as suggested by experts. Protesters include local activists, retired teachers, and residents from affected villages seeking urgent action from authorities.

Leaders of the District Bachao Andolan and Environmental Protection Forum also demanded a health and environment study by reputed institutions like AIIMS and IISc, saying thousands of people in around 22 villages are affected and need a special government package for recovery and rehabilitation, while urging immediate inspection, stricter pollution control measures, and long-term relocation planning for hazardous industries in the region. Protest leaders warned that agitation will continue until action is taken.
