Iyer tipped to take reins from Suryakumar

The BCCI reportedly plans to replace Suryakumar Yadav with Shreyas Iyer as India’s T20I captain for the 2028 cycle.

NEW DELHI

In a move that has sent shockwaves through the cricketing world, the BCCI is reportedly set to replace Suryakumar Yadav with Shreyas Iyer as India’s T20I captain. Despite leading India to a historic T20 World Cup title just last month, “SKY” is expected to be relieved of his duties following a prolonged slump with the bat and persistent fitness concerns.

Reports suggest that the selection committee has “run out of patience” with Suryakumar’s individual returns. Since taking over the leadership in July 2024, the 35-year-old has managed only 932 runs in 45 matches, a sharp decline from the world-class standards he previously set. Compounding the issue is a lingering wrist injury that has required heavy taping for nearly 18 months, leading to rumors that he may even miss Mumbai Indians’ upcoming clash against Bengaluru.

In contrast, Shreyas Iyer has emerged as the frontrunner for the role after a stellar IPL 2026 campaign. Leading the Punjab Kings to six wins in their first seven games while amassing over 300 runs, Iyer is seen as a younger, more stable option for the future. The BCCI is reportedly aiming for a single white-ball captain for both ODIs and T20Is to create continuity ahead of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

An official announcement is expected within a fortnight of the IPL final, as selectors finalize squads for the upcoming tours of Ireland and England. While Suryakumar’s tactical success is undeniable, the board’s eye on the 2028 cycle looks set to usher in a new era of leadership.
