India is emerging as a key player in global space innovation and standardisation, said Nidhi Khare while addressing an international space systems meeting in New Delhi on Friday. She said the country is now at the forefront of global space transformation and rapidly becoming a hub for innovation and private sector participation in the space industry.
Khare was speaking at the opening plenary of the 35th ISO TC 20/SC 14 meeting on “Space Systems and Operations,” hosted by the Bureau of Indian Standards. She highlighted that international cooperation is essential for building strong global standards for the growing space ecosystem.
She noted that major policy reforms and the creation of the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Centre (IN-SPACe) have played a crucial role in opening up India’s space sector. These changes, she said, have enabled startups and established industries to participate more actively in space-related activities.
According to Khare, global standards developed through shared expertise will ensure that space operations remain safe, sustainable, and inclusive as the industry expands worldwide. She also emphasized that India hosting such a high-level international meeting reflects its growing importance in the global space economy.
The event brought together delegates from several countries, including representatives of national standards bodies, space agencies, industry experts, and academic institutions. Officials from the Bureau of Indian Standards said efforts are underway to align Indian standards with international frameworks to improve quality, safety, and competitiveness in the sector.
IN-SPACe Chairman Pawan Goenka also highlighted that India’s space ecosystem is witnessing rapid transformation driven by reforms and private participation. He stressed that strong global standards will support innovation and help integrate India more deeply into the global space economy.
