A farmer in Vijayapura district allegedly attempted to consume poison during the commencement of transmission tower erection work in Kolhar taluk, officials said. He has since been shifted to hospital and is under medical observation.
According to Vijayapura Deputy Commissioner Dr. Anand K., the incident is linked to the ongoing 765 KV transmission line project from Narendra Receiving Station (Kudgi) to Pune GIS Receiving Station under the Union Ministry of Power. The project involves tower and power line installation across Basavan Bagewadi, Babaleshwar, Tikota, and Kolhar taluks.
Out of 177 identified tower locations, foundation work has been completed at 168 sites, while work is underway at the remaining locations. The incident occurred in Talevad village at Survey No. 161/2, belonging to farmer Mallanagouda Hanamantagouda Biradar.
Officials said compensation of ₹8,96,236 had been fixed as per norms for the acquisition of around two-and-a-half guntas of land for the tower corridor. The foundation work at the site had already been completed prior to the incident.
Officials arrived to begin tower erection work when the farmer allegedly attempted to consume poison in their presence and in front of villagers. He was immediately rushed to the district hospital for treatment.
The Deputy Commissioner confirmed that the farmer is stable and under medical care. Authorities are continuing to monitor the situation as the project progresses, while also addressing local concerns related to land use and compensation under the transmission line development work.
